Florida Panthers' left winger Richard Zednik was seriously injured Sunday during the game against the Buffalo Sabres in Buffalo. Zednik was inadvertently sliced on the neck when a teammate was falling to the ground. Zednik managed to skate back to the bench before falling into the arms of a trainer and teammate. He is listed in stable condition Monday after surgery went well. The season is more than likely over for him, but he should be back for next season.

This is the second skate cutting injury in two days. Saturday, NHL linesman Pat Dapuzzo was struck in the face by a skate from a Philadelphia Flyers' player. The resulting cut required over 20 stitches to his face, nose and cheek.
I know that the NHL doesn't require the players to wear protection for their neck and or face, but maybe it should be investigated a little bit more. The goalies have protection they can wear to protect their neck, but not the regular players do not. NASCAR institutes protective devices to ensure the safety of their athletes, why not the NHL? Let me know what you think about this or if you have any recommendations.
